In 2021, corrugated case materials were the most produced grade of paper and paperboard worldwide, at 183.7 million metric tons. The second most produced paper and paperboard grade that year was printing and writing papers.
The distribution of paper grade production has changed significantly over the past two decades due to changing consumer behavior and digitalization. In 2000, 39.5 million metric tons of newsprint was produced worldwide, representing 12 percent of total global paper and paperboard production, but by 2021 this share had fallen to just 3.4 percent. Meanwhile, case materials share of total production has increased from 29 percent to 44 percent during this same period.
