Germany has 1.8 gigawatts worth of lignite-fueled coal power capacity in emergency reserves. It is the only fossil fuel type of which the country holds emergency reserves, although, grid and capacity reserves are available for natural gas, hard coal, and oil-fueled power stations. Coal power is the largest fossil fuel-based source of electricity generation in Germany. As of 2022, the combined electricity generating capacity of lignite-fueled and hard coal-fueled power plants stood at nearly 30 gigawatts. By comparison, natural gas power capacity was around 27.4 gigawatts.
