Year-on-year GDP development in Germany 2007-2025
In 2020 and 2021, the German economic development was shaped by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. In 2020, the first year of the pandemic, the gross domestic product decreased by 3.7 percent compared to the previous year. The German economy recovered somewhat in the following year, but the economic development fell short of expectations under the continued influence of the pandemic. For 2022, there was a growth of 1.8 percent. Due to the Russia-Ukraine war and persistently high inflation, the ifo Institute has revised its forecasts for economic growth downwards.
