Number of outpatient visits in U.S. hospitals 2015-2020, by type of hospital
In 2020, around 777 million outpatient visits took place in hospitals across the United States. During that year, with an estimated 749.5 million visits, most outpatient visits took place in general medical and surgical hospitals. However, roughly two-thirds of such outpatient visits were registered among privately-owned structures. Since 2015, the number of outpatient visits steadily increased in the US. However, as a probable result of the coronavirus pandemic, the number of outpatient visits decreased in 2020.
