EU ETS aviation emission allowances by type 2022

The supply of aviation allowances issued under the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) totaled 27.2 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO₂e) in 2022. Of this total, 23.5 MtCO₂e were freely allocated and 3.7 MtCO₂e were auctioned. One allowance – or carbon credit – gives the holder the right to emit one metric ton of carbon dioxide or its equivalent.

The demand for aviation emission allowances have typically been far higher than the number of allowances allocated due to rising emissions within the sector. This means that the aviation sector has had to purchase additional allowances from the stationary sector in most years. The outbreak of COVID-19 ended this trend as emissions plummeted in 2020 as a result of lockdowns. As such, the demand for allowances from aviation fell below the amount of aviation allowances available in 2020 and 2021. However, in 2022, the demand for aviation allowances exceeded once again the number of allowances allocated.
