Between 2018 and 2021, brand drugs were consistently the type of pharmaceutical drugs taking up the largest share of the market in terms of volume in Italy. This share, moreover, increased over the period under consideration, peaking at 53.76 percent in 2021. According to data, the market volume share of generic drugs followed a similar trend from 2018 to 2021, while the share of patented drugs shrank.
