The 30 largest shipping companies worldwide that have pledged to reach net zero GHG emissions by 2050 or follow the IMO strategy* to reduce GHG emissions controlled about 23 percent of the global fleet at the end of 2021. Due to the high consolidation within the container segment, the largest container shipping companies with decarbonization pledges operated some 69 percent of the world's container fleet.

*The IMO strategy includes the following non-binding objectives: improving the design efficiency of existing and new-build ships, reducing GHG emissions by 50% and fully decarbonize "as soon as possible in this century", and reducing emissions intensity by 2030.
