Share of EEDI-compliant new build fleet worldwide by ship type 2017
As of 2017, more than 70 percent of newly built containerships complied with the 2025 EEDI standard. Ships built starting from 2013 are subject to the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI), a design standard introduced by the International Maritime Organisation. The standard puts a cap on the amount of CO2 allowed per unit of transport work. By 2025, the EEDI requires vessels to achieve a 30 percent reduction in their carbon emissions compared to the average emissions of ships built between 1999 and 2009.
