In 2021, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the National Electric System (SEN) in Mexico reached an estimated 139.2 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO₂e). This figure was expected to increase to 165.7 MtCO₂e if no measures are taken to reduce emissions. Meanwhile, in an unconditional scenario, Mexico could reduce its GHG emissions from the electricity sector by almost 30 percent in a decade, to 97.7 MtCO₂e in 2030.
