Nurses who want to leave nursing and seek another career in the US 2023

From 2019 to 2023, the share of nurses wanting to leave nursing grew in the United States. According to this survey, five percent of registered nurses in the U.S. wanted to leave nursing and seek work in another field, three percent more than in previous years. Nonetheless, this survey reveals that the vast majority of nurses wish to remain in nursing.

The question was framed as "What are your plans to change your work status in the coming year?"

The survey polled more than 800,000 Registered Nurses in the United States from Jan. 5 to Jan. 18, 2023, and received 18,226 completed questionnaires used in this report, of which 11,918 were from staff nurses with the remainder being travel nurses, per diem and other. The margin of error is 1% at a 99% confidence level, and the response rate is 2.5%.

Percentages in the report may not total 100% due to rounding or to comparisons of independent samples.
