Coal was the largest source of global power sector carbon emissions in 2023, at almost 67 percent. However, the distribution of emission sources varies by region. In Asia, almost 86 percent of the emissions produced from electricity generation came from coal-fired power plants in 2023. By comparison, coal accounted for 46.6 percent of power sector emissions in Europe, with natural gas accounting for almost 42 percent. The region with the lowest share of power sector emissions from coal was Latin America, at less than 20 percent.

Figures were calculated by Statista using data provided by the source. *Other fossil includes generation from oil and petroleum products, as well as manufactured gases and waste. **Other Renewables generation includes geothermal, tidal and wave generation.
Figures aim to include full lifecycle emissions including upstream methane, supply-chain and manufacturing emissions, and include all gases, converted into CO₂ equivalent over a 100 year timescale.
