Coal-fired power emissions in China totaled just over 5.2 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (GtCO₂e) in 2023, accounting for slightly more than half of global coal power emissions. Rapid economic growth has seen China's coal emissions increased five-fold since the turn of the century. India has also experienced significant emissions growth since 2000, with levels reaching a high of 1.3 GtCO₂e in 2023. In comparison, coal-fired power emissions in the U.S. and EU have fallen by 65 and 58 percent since 2000, respectively.
