Japan: contribution to CPI change by category 2023

In 2023, food items were the category that contributed most to the year-on-year change of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) of all items in Japan, with 2.17 index points. Culture and recreation followed with 0.39 contribution index points. The CPI of all items rose to 105.6 index points in 2023, up by 3.2 percent year on year.

The Consumer Price Index is compiled monthly to measure changes in various goods and services purchased by households all over Japan to analyze the movement of prices in time series. It is collected based on retail prices of each municipality and item obtained from the Retail Price Survey, using the Laspeyres-type formula.
