Heating and cooling share of household energy Europe

Over half of the energy consumed by households in most European countries was dedicated to space heating in 2021. Spain, Cyprus, Albania, Portugal, and Malta were the only countries included here where space heating amounted to less than 50 percent of the energy used. Malta and Portugal were the countries with the highest share of energy dedicated to space cooling. On average, 14.5 percent of the energy used in households in the European Union (EU-27) was dedicated to heating water.
