Greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S. 1990-2022, by economic sector
Economic sectors in the United States emitted the equivalent of 6.32 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (GtCO₂e) in 2022. The transportation sector was responsible for roughly 28 percent of this total, making it the highest-emitting sector in the U.S.
The electric power industry was the most polluting sector in 2005, but it has managed to reduce its emissions by roughly 36 percent since then. This is mainly due to the shift away from coal-fired power generation to natural gas-fired power generation, and the increased use of renewable energy sources. The electric power industry alone accounts for more than 75 percent of overall U.S. emissions reductions since 2005.
