This statistics shows the death rate for the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) disease among the male U.S. population by ethnicity, in 1987 and 2013. In 1987, there were 8.7 deaths among white males in the U.S. by the HIV disease per 100,000 inhabitants.
HIV disease death rate for males in the U.S. in 1987 and 2013, by ethnicity
(per 100,000 resident population)
The race groups, white, black, Asian or Pacific Islander, and American Indian or Alaska Native, include persons of Hispanic and non-Hispanic origin. Persons of Hispanic origin may be of any race. Death rates for the American Indian or Alaska Native and Asian or Pacific Islander populations are known to be underestimated.
Categories for the coding and classification of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) disease were introduced in the United States in 1987. For the period 1987-1998, underlying cause of death was coded according to the 9th Revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD).
Starting with 1999 data, cause of death is coded according to ICD-10. To estimate change between 1998 and 1999, compare the 1999 rate with the comparability-modified rate for 1998.
All rates are age-adjusted. Age-adjusted rates are calculated using the year 2000 standard population. Prior to 2003, age-adjusted rates were calculated using standard million proportions based on rounded population numbers. Starting with 2003 data, unrounded population numbers are used to calculate age-adjusted rates.
* Rates based on fewer than 20 deaths are considered unreliable and are not shown.
** Prior to 1997, excludes data from states lacking an Hispanic-origin item on the death certificate.
