Number of employees at Coal India Limited 2002-2018

The power industry in India has one of the most diversified sectors in the world. Both conventional and non-conventional sources work actively to meet the energy requirements of the south Asian nation. Despite not being environment-friendly, more than 50 percent of the country’s primary energy consumption comes from coal. Coal India Limited was the largest coal producing company in the world, with its headquarters in Kolkata, West Bengal, and state-owned. The company had over 300 thousand employees during financial year 2018.

Coal India

Coal India operates in over 80 mining areas and the consultancy is spread over eight provincial states in the country. It commands nearly 75 percent of the Indian coal market. The production comes through seven wholly owned subsidiaries of the company.

Future of the energy sector

Coal consumption across the nation had increased steadily over the recent years, excluding the exceptionally low consumption in 2017. The wholesale price index of coal also reached its second highest peak over the last decade in 2017. Despite the climate agreements of Copenhagen and Paris to focus on renewable and clean energy installations across the country, a report from NITI Aayog estimated the share of coal to be over 40 percent of the energy mix in 2040. However, recent government initiatives aim to reduce this estimated coal consumption and transfer this load over to the renewable sources of energy.
