Shell's number of shares 2010-2022

Shell’s number of shares amounted to roughly 7.3 billion in 2022. This is an increase from the number of shares available in 2010; which equaled about 6.1 billion shares. However, figures in 2022 were 936 million below the peak number of shares recorded in 2018. Shell is one of the leading oil and gas companies worldwide. It is headquartered in the Hague, Netherlands.

Company overview

Shell, former Royal Dutch Shell, is a group of chemical and petrochemical companies. Their businesses deal with the extraction of crude oil and natural gas as well as the refining and production of oils and gases. While Shell’s revenue has been variable over the years, 2020 saw a notable decline. That year, revenues fell by nearly 50 percent due to lower transportation fuel demand as an oil price slump following the coronavirus pandemic. As of 2022, the largest share of Shell’s revenue came from Europe, followed by Asia, Oceania and Africa.

Shell’s environmental impact

Shell, like many oil companies, does not have a clean track record when it comes to oil spills and environmental impact. In 2008 Shell was responsible for an oil spill in the Niger delta that affected over 69,000 people and horribly damaged the natural landscape and wildlife. The company has made efforts to reduce their environmental impact in some ways. Since the 2008 oil spill Shell has decreased the amount of oil released in operational spills, limiting their environmental impact. Likewise, the direct greenhouse gas emissions made by Shell have decreased over time. The company has announced it will reduce fossil fuel production by over 50 percent until 2030 and instead focus its efforts on contributing to the construction of a zero carbon energy infrastructure. It has already begun investing in projects such as for solar power plants and hydrogen.
