by Ian Tiseo, last edited Aug 9, 2019
Oil - consumption in Turkey 1990-2018 Turkey’s consumption of oil has seen a dramatic increase since 1995, when it was at just 22.9 million metric tons. Consumption remained relatively stable between 2005 and 2011, but in the following years the country saw an annual increase, peaking at 49.2 million metric tons. in 2017.
Crude oil production

Between 2012 and 2018, Turkey experienced an overall increase in its production of oil, rising from 33.8 thousand barrels per day to 48.6 thousand barrels per day. Despite this increase, Turkey is far from one the biggest oil producing countries in the world, and pales in comparison to countries such as the United States, Saudi Arabia and Russia.

Crude oil imports

Crude oil imports to Turkey have fluctuated greatly since 2006. In 2014, imports amounted to 353 thousand barrels per day, and increased to 506 thousand barrels the following year. As Turkey is not a major oil producing country, it relies on imports, originating mostly from the middle East and Russia. Turkey had formally been importing crude oil from Iran, however sanctions from the U.S have meant Turkey has had to look elsewhere. This has seen increased imports from Russia and Iraq.
