Primary energy consumption in China 2019-2021, by fuel
Coal is by far the major primary energy fuel used in China, with a consumption volume amounting to 86.2 exajoules in 2021. Ranking second that year was oil, accounting for nearly 20 percent of the East Asian country's total consumption. By contrast, China's primary energy consumption from renewable sources amounted to 11.3 exajoules in 2021, up from 8.5 exajoules in the previous year.
