Social housing sales: right to buy sales of local authorities 2001-2017 This statistic shows the annual right to buy sales of social housing sold by local authorities in England from 2001-2002 to 2016-2017. Right to buy is a government scheme in England that was set up to support eligible council and housing association tenants with the purchasing of their home, by offering a discount on the price of the property. It can be seen that the number of right to buy sales of social housing sold by local authorities decreased overall during this period, from a total of almost 52 thousand in 2001-02 to a total of over 13.4 thousand as of 2016-2017. Furthermore, the largest number of right to buy sales occurred in the period 2003-04, when a total of more than 69.5 thousand sales took place.
