This statistic is based on a survey and shows the profile of experiences of the U.S. population over 40 years of age with long-term health care, as of 2014. Some 17 percent of the U.S. population over 40 years of age were both care providers and recipients of long-term care. As people age, many begin to depend on their families for assistance. The elderly population in the United States consisted of 12 percent of the total population in 2012 and is expected to increase to 20 percent by 2030.
