Pizza restaurants in the U.S. - additional information
Pizza, and Italian cuisine more broadly, is very popular in the United States. U.S. consumers are not only eating pizza at home – they spend around 33 billion U.S. dollars in quick service pizza restaurants each year.
In 2017, there were 75,243 pizza restaurants in the U.S., down from 76,723 the previous year. Of these, over half are accounted for by independent restaurants and a quarter are made up of restaurants belonging to the leading four pizza chains: Pizza Hut, Domino’s Pizza, Little Caesars and Papa John’s. Pizza Hut is operated by parent company Yum! Brands, one of the largest quick service restaurant companies worldwide, with revenues of 6.37 billion U.S. dollars in 2016. The company also operates KFC and Taco Bell. Domino’s Pizza is the second largest pizza chain in the U.S. but the largest worldwide, generating almost 2.5 billion U.S. dollars in revenue from its 13,811 global stores in 2016.
During a survey of U.S. consumers in March 2017, all four leading pizza chains made the ranking of the eight most popular pizza restaurants. The top three favorites were Marco's Pizza, Papa Murphy’s and Pizza Ranch, in that order.
