Pizza restaurants in the U.S. - additional information
Pizza, and Italian cuisine more broadly, is very popular in the United States. Market research company Nielsen Scarborough found that more than 70 million Americans had consumed frozen pizza in the past week during a survey conducted in spring 2016. And U.S. consumers are not only eating pizza at home – they spend around 33 billion U.S. dollars in quick service pizza restaurants each year.
In 2016, there were 76,723 pizza restaurants in the U.S., up from 74,812 the previous year. Of these, over half are accounted for by independent restaurants and a quarter are made up of restaurants belonging to the leading four pizza chains: Pizza Hut, Domino’s Pizza, Little Caesars and Papa John’s. Pizza Hut is operated by parent company Yum! Brands, one of the largest quick service restaurant companies worldwide, with revenues of 13.11 billion U.S. dollars in 2015. The company also operates KFC and Taco Bell. Domino’s Pizza is the second largest pizza chain in the U.S. but the largest worldwide, generating almost two billion U.S. dollars in revenue from its 12,530 global stores in 2015.
During a survey of U.S. consumers in March 2016, all four leading pizza chains made the ranking of the eight most popular pizza restaurants. The top three favorites were Papa Murphy’s, Pizza Ranch and Marco's Pizza, in that order.
