Supplementary notes

The industry forecast is based on sector 18 of the industry branch classification of the Statistisches Bundesamt. This sector includes the printing of products like newspapers, magazines, books, business forms, greeting cards etc. as well as support services like bookbinding, the production of printing plates and data imaging. These supporting services are an integral part in the production of printed products, and a product (printing plate, computer storage disc or file), that is an integral part of the production of printed products is almost always produced within the range of these services. The methods used during the printing process include various techniques for the transmission of images from discs, screens or computer files onto other types of media like paper, plastic, metal, textiles or wood. The transmission of images from discs or screens onto the new media is the most common method (lithography, gravure printing, screen printing and flexo printing). Frequently, the computer file is also used to directly control the printing mechanism, an electrostatic or other device, in order to produce a picture (digital or non-impact printing). It is possible to complete the printing and publishing process in the same place. However, there is a trend towards separating these processes and carry them out in different companies. This sector also includes the reproduction of recorded media, e.g. CDs, video recordings or software on tapes, discs etc.
