This statistic shows global IT spending from 2005 to 2016 and a forecast for spending on information technology until 2021. In 2016, IT spending worldwide amounted to 3.41 trillion U.S. dollars.


Worldwide IT spending forecast - additional information

Global IT spending has risen almost every year since 2005 and it is projected to rise further in 2017. Of the 3.46 billion U.S. dollars predicted to be spent on IT in 2017, 938 billion U.S. dollars are forecast to be spent in the IT services industry and 355 billion spent on enterprise software. The enterprise software industry is forecast to grow further with revenue projected to hit 351 billion U.S. dollars in 2017. The telecom service sector is the segment of the IT industry which traditionally generates the most revenue, with spending in this sector reaching 1.38 billion U.S. dollars in 2016, a slight decrease from the previous year. Of telecom spending in 2017, around 1.25 billion was expected to be spent in the wireless sector.

Further losses are also projected in the devices market, where spending is forecast to fall from 662 billion U.S. dollars in 2015 to 627 billion U.S. dollars in 2016. Overall, IT spending is forecast to increase in the coming years. Spending in IT support services, for example, is expected to grow from 153.2 billion U.S. dollars in 2015 to 164 billion U.S. dollars by 2018.
