Installed wind power capacity in Germany 2008-2023
Wind power capacity in Germany has increased significantly since 2008, reaching the peak of 69,459 megawatts in 2023. This was an increase when compared with the previous year, wherein the value was around 66,163 megawatts. Onshore wind energy accounted for the majority of installations. In 2021, combined capacity on wind farms on land reached 56,013 megawatts.
Wind energy production
As wind power capacity has increased, so has electricity generation from wind. In 2000, generation from wind stood at 9.5 terawatt hours. By 2021, this had increased to 113.9 terawatt hours, of which, 89.5 terawatt hours came from onshore wind. Germany is the leader in wind power electricity generation in Europe. Wind power plays an important role in Germany’s renewable energy mix. In 2021, it made up 20.3 percent of renewable sources used to generate electricity.
