EU: rail performance index - intensity of use 2015

This bar chart compares how the Boston Consulting Group rated the performance of rail services in European countries in 2015, in terms of intensity of use. These calculations took into account how well the rail transport infrastructure is utilised, including both passenger and freight transport. Switzerland received the highest index rating of three.

Intensity of use was calculated as a combination of passenger volume and goods volume.

The source provides the following information regarding calculation methodology:
"Each dimension comprises at least two subdimensions, and all were given equal weight. (See Exhibit 1.) We rescaled the data to represent a score out of ten for each subdimension. To create the index, we then combined the ratings for each dimension and subdimension based on their weighting."
