Population of Germany 1995-2017, by gender There are more women than men in Germany, although the number of men has been slowly increasing in recent years, especially since 2015. Based on recent figures, Germany’s current population amounts to almost 82.9 million inhabitants.
Births and deaths

These figures may be attributed to several developments. When looking at deaths by gender in EU countries a few years ago, significantly more men died in Germany than women – 2,500 to 999. Gender distribution is also influenced by birth rates, namely the number of boys and girls born in any given year, as well as infant mortality. Other contributing factors include migration to and from Germany.

Future challenges

There are a number of challenges facing the German population in the future. Some of the most pressing ones are its ageing structure in combination with slow birth rates, as well as the growing urban population.
