Chinese textile and clothing industry
The textile and clothing industry has been a pillar industry in China’s exports since the open door policy and economic reforms were introduced in 1979. According to IKAR data analysis, as of 2019, China was the largest exporter of textile and clothing products in the world with about 24,000 enterprises in this industry and around eight million employers. Textile and clothing exports accounted for more than 20 percent of China’s total exports. Between 2013 and 2017, China accounted for 40 percent of the global exports of textiles, apparel, and leather, representing an increase by 14 percent compared to a decade earlier. Concurrently, the share of the world's imports remained the same.
