Mobile communications is an important part of the billion-dollar telecommunication services industry. The revenue generated with mobile services worldwide is projected to reach more than 1,100 billion U.S. dollars in 2015. The number of mobile subscribers and mobile phone users are important indicators of the mobile communications market size.
Mobile subscribers represent the number of SIM card connections registered on a mobile network. Worldwide, the number of unique mobile subscribers is expected to top four billion by 2016. Of these four billion subscribers, around 28 million are located in Canada. Bell Canada is the leader in terms of mobile subscribers in Canada with 8.12 million mobile/wireless subscribers in 2014. Canada is also amongst the leading countries in regards to the share of mobile phone users who have a smartphone. 63 percent of Canadian mobile subscribers have smartphones, only Japan and South Korea have a higher smartphone penetration rate amongst mobile subscribers.
Mobile phone users are defined as individuals who can use a mobile device to transfer data or make a call. The number of mobile phone users is projected to reach over nine billion in 2020 worldwide. In Canada, the number of mobile phone users is forecast to reach 28.7 million in 2015.
