Global wood pellet production in selected regions 2017 This statistic displays the global production of wood pellets in 2017, in selected regions. Wood pellet market

Pellet fuels are comprised of compressed organic matter or biomass material such as industrial waste, food waste, and energy crops. Wood pellets are the most common type of pellet fuel and are generally made from compacted sawdust. The EU-28 were by far the world’s largest producer of wood pellets, producing some 14 million metric tons of wood pellets in 2016. Increased fossil fuel prices in 2005 have stimulated the demand for wood pellet heating in the EU and North America. The wood pellet market is expected to reach 38 million metric tons in the EU by 2025. Due to high consumption of wood pellets in the EU, most European countries also import a larger share of resources from other countries. Denmark imported over 425 million U.S. dollars’ worth of wood pellets in 2013. In 2020, the EU is expected to produce 13 million metric tons of wood pellets.

Pinnacle, a pellet company in British Columbia, Canada, is one of the largest producers of wood pellets in North America. The company produced over 1.04 million metric tons of wood pellets. Currently, Pinnacle has seven plants across British Columbia and employs over 250 people. Pellets can be made directly from forest material, but this requires more energy to dry the wood and to transport and manufacture energy.
