Water releases of production-related chemical waste in the U.S. 2020, by chemical

Approximately 194 million pounds of TRI-listed chemicals were released to water bodies in the United States across more than 21,000 facilities in 2020. Of this amount, nitrate compounds accounted for 91 percent of total water releases. Nitrate compounds are soluble in water and often form during wastewater treatment processes. The remaining nine percent of water releases were made up of other chemical compounds such as methanol and manganese.
The food manufacturing sector contributes the largest share of water releases.
