Municipal solid waste disposal methods in the U.S. 2018
The United States generated 292 million metric tons of municipal solid waste in 2018. Of this amount, approximately 50 percent was landfilled. As of 2018, the number of municipal waste landfills in the U.S. stood at 1,269. The most common type of waste material landfilled in the U.S. is food, yard trimming, and inorganic waste, followed by plastics.
