
Largest municipal solid waste landfills in the United States 2020, by waste in place
As of 2020, the Puente Hills Landfill located in Whittier, California was the largest landfill in the United States in terms of waste in place, holding more than 142 million tons of waste. Although it has been closed since 2002, the Fresh Kills Landfill located in New York City holds the second largest amount of waste in the country, at some 135 million tons. Fresh Kills Landfill was once the largest landfill in the world, but since its closure it has been transformed into a public green space.
