Employment rate in Sweden 2019, by age group

The employment rate in Sweden increased since the lowest point in 2010, reaching the highest point of the period in 2018 and 2019 when the employment rate was 68.3 percent. The highest employment rate was among people from 45 to 54 years, where it was 89 percent, and lowest among 65 to 74 years, where it was 17.5 percent.

Higher employment rate among men

     The employment rate for men and women in Sweden basically followed the same pattern during the period from 2009 to 2019. The large difference, however, is that the employment rate among men was higher than the employment rate among women, for all years in the period. In 2019, men’s employment was at the highest level, reaching 70.5 percent. In comparison, the employment rate for women was at 66.1 percent, which was a slight decrease compared to 2018.  

Employment types

   The majority of the employed in Sweden were permanent employees amounting to roughly 3.9 million in 2019. Around 7.7 thousand were temporary employees, and around 5.1 thousand were self-employed or family workers.
