Number of pupils in primary school in Sweden 2008-2018 The population, including the primary school-age population in Sweden grew annually from 2008 to 2018. In 2018, there were roughly 1.2 million children in Sweden between 5 and 14 years old. During the same period, the number of pupils in primary school first decreased from the schoolyear 2008/09 to the lowest number of the period in the schoolyear 2010/11 when around 887 thousand pupils attended primary school. After the schoolyear 2010/11, the number of pupils that attended primary school increased annually, especially in the later years of the period, reaching around 1.1 million pupils in the schoolyear 2018/19.
Decrease in the number of primary schools

     Primary school in Sweden consists of nine years of compulsory education, and the schools are administered by the municipalities. In 2010, there were 4,909 primary schools in Sweden, but this number decreased annually after this year, and in 2017 there were 4,832 primary schools in Sweden. In 2018, the number had again raised, by two more schools reaching 4,834.  

Increased number of pupils per primary school

   The constant increase since the schoolyear 2010/11 of pupils attending primary school, combined with the decreasing number of schools since 2010 led to a constant increase of number of pupils per primary school during the same period. In 2018, there were on average 221 pupils per primary school in Sweden.
