Primary education expenditure in Sweden 2007-2017, per pupil The expenditure on primary education in Sweden increased significantly since 2009. In this year, the expenditure amounted to 72.9 billion Swedish kronor, which was an expenditure of 83 thousand Swedish kronor per pupil. The expenditure had raised to 111 billion Swedish kronor by 2017, and an expenditure per pupil of 108 thousand.
Decreasing number of schools and increasing number of pupils

The primary schools in Sweden are administered individually by each of the 290 municipalities in the country, and during the period from 2012 to 2018, the number of primary schools decreased. In contrast, the number of pupils attending primary school increased constantly since the schoolyear 2008/09, and in the schoolyear of 2018/19, around 1.07 million pupils attended primary school.

Increasing number of pupils per primary school

Not surprisingly, the decrease in number of schools and the increase in number of pupils led to an annual increase in the average number of pupils per primary school from 2012 to 2018. In 2018, there were 221 pupils per primary school registered.
