Restaurant and mobile food service revenue in the United Kingdom (UK) 2008-2018

Restaurants and mobile food services in the United Kingdom (UK) seemingly enjoyed a bumper year in 2018, generating turnovers amounting to 39.9 billion British pounds. This is higher than at any other stage during the reported period, and an almost six percent improvement on the year before.

Number of outlets on the rise

The eating out industry has undergone a period of growth in recent years. The increase in turnover has been matched by an increase in the number of restaurant and mobile food businesses. In addition, other food-led premises such as food-led pubs have undergone significant growth. Over a five-year period between 2013 and 2018, branded food pubs increased by 17.2 percent, while traditional restaurant venues recorded a 7.7 percent rise. Household spending on food services is also trending up, despite a slight fall from 2017 to 2018.

An end to the restaurant rise?

Despite its growth, the restaurant market in the UK continues to face challenges that have already begun to affect businesses. Between 2018 and 2019, the restaurant sector experienced closures across different types of food and drink premises, signaling a slowdown for the market. Industry experts however remain positive, suggesting that consumer demand is still high, and Brits’ fast changing tastes in food trends mean that there are yet more opportunities to be explored.
