Seven of the top ten most well-known restaurant chains in the UK are American. This includes the top two ranked brands McDonald's and KFC, each with a brand awareness of 96 percent and 95 percent among internet respondents in the United Kingdom respectively. The only UK-based restaurant chains in the top ten are the ninth placed Pizza Express and the tenth placed Wetherspoons.
For this study, brand awareness was surveyed employing the concept of aided brand recognition, showing respondents both the brand's logo and the written brand name.
