UK-based platforms Just Eat and Deliveroo are two major players in the online food delivery market. Both act as an intermediary between restaurants and customers, providing an online platform for ordering meals to be delivered to the home. Just Eat processes over 100 million orders a year in the UK, representing the company’s biggest market. Another UK platform Hungryhouse (previously owned by Delivery Hero) was also acquired by Just Eat in 2016. Global brand Domino’s Pizza, operating in the UK under the master franchise Domino’s Pizza Group, is a major player on the pizza delivery market, offering customers the ability to order online as well as by phone. Alongside Just Eat, Domino’s is one of the UK's most popular online takeaway providers.
According to Statista’s Digital Market Outlook, revenues from online takeaway platforms and restaurant delivery are expected to continue growing, especially as more consumers turn to ordering food during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. At the start of the UK's lockdown in March 2020, many consumers had already begun to order takeaways more often.
