U.S. President's federal government IT budget 2015-2020, by department

Federal government information technology (IT) budget in the United States from 2015 to 2020, by department (in million U.S. dollars)

by Shanhong Liu, last edited Sep 13, 2019
U.S. President's federal government IT budget 2015-2020, by department In 2019, the United States federal government budget has allotted over 51 billion dollars toward its 2020 information technology budget. The 2020 budget figures do not include the portion of the budget allocated to the Department of Defense or other classified IT spending. As leadership and government priorities change, the IT budgets allocated to different departments tend to follow suit. The IT budget of the Department of Health and Human Services fell from nearly 14 billion in 2018 to less than six billion in 2019.

U.S. government budget

The proposed U.S. budget for 2020 amounted to over 4.7 trillion dollars, making it one of the highest of all time. Huge shares of government expenditures go towards the Department of Health and Human Services as well as the Social Security Administration. Due in part to the country’s continually increasing budget, the government has run at a yearly deficit since 2002, with its 2020 deficit expected to amount to over a trillion dollars.

Cyber Security budget

One of the main facets of the U.S. government IT budget is spending related to cyber security. Over 16 billion U.S. dollars have been allocated towards cyber security in 2019, a number which is expected to increase in 2020. The Departments of Defense and Homeland Security have unsurprisingly had the highest cyber security budgets across all departments, given the sensitive nature of their work.
