GHG emissions from power plants in the U.S. 2011-2020
Reported direct emissions from power plant facilities in the United States totaled 1.49 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (GtCO2e) in 2020. U.S. power plant emissions have reduced by more than 30 percent since 2011, when they totaled 2.2 GtCO2e. The U.S. electric power industry is the second-largest carbon polluter in the country.
