Volume of cargo in major ports across India FY 2010-2019

In the financial year of 2019, the major ports across the south Asian country of India witnessed a cargo volume of about 700 million metric tons. Major ports handled around 55 percent of cargo volume in that year. About 70 percent of trade by value and more than 95 percent by volume across the country was done through maritime transport.

Major ports are under the union list while the non-major ports are under the concurrent list of the constitution of India. Therefore, major ports are under the administrative control of government of India while the non-major ports are governed by the respective maritime state governments.
