Peak government debt as share of GDP in the Benelux 2000-2016 This statistic shows the government debt in the Benelux countries as of the third quarter of 2016, compared to their highest debt between 2000 and 2016 (in share of GDP). In the third quarter of 2016, the government debt ratio in the Netherlands was approximately 62 percent, a decrease from the highest level of roughly 69 percent. Between 2006 and 2016, the general government debt in the Netherlands increased from approximately 260 billion euros in 2006 to a value of approximately 434 billion euros in 2016. In 2014, the government debt was at his highest level. Since then, the ruling government coalition of the centre-right People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) and social democratic Labour party (PvDA) took measures to reduce the public debt.
