Number of summer houses in Iceland 2010-2021

Over the period from 2010 to 2021, the number of summer houses in Iceland constantly increased. By the end of this period, it reached its peak as there were more than 14.6 thousand summer cottages in Iceland. This might be related to the generally increasing number of arrivals in tourist accommodations in recent years. In 2016, there were around 4.6 million arrivals of tourists in accommodation establishments in Iceland.

Tourist arrivals in Icelandic accommodations

In general, the number of domestic as well as international tourist arrivals in accommodation establishments in Iceland grew in the time from 2006 to 2016. As of 2016, the number of foreign arrivals was clearly higher than the number of domestic arrivals. In this year, there were nearly four million international arrivals in tourist accommodations and approximately 650 thousand domestic arrivals counted.

Accommodation types with the highest number of guest nights

In 2017, the number of guest nights in hotels and guesthouses was by far the highest in Iceland. In this year, it reached almost 5.6 million. By comparison, camping sites followed with roughly one million guest nights, ahead of apartments, youth hostels, holiday centers, private homes and lodges.
