Share of individuals aged 65 and over with a cirrhosis in Spain 2014 This statistic depicts the share of elderly population aged 65 and over suffering from liver cirrhosis or hepatic insufficiency in Spain in 2014, by age group. That year, approximately 1.4 percent of the elderly population aged between 75 and 84 years in Spain suffered from cirrhosis or liver failure. Hepatic insufficiency is the inability of the liver to perform its normal synthetic and metabolic function usually due to long-term damage. Risk factors include high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, high blood cholesterol, and alcohol abuse as well as having suffered from certain conditions such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. In 2015, the number of deaths recorded in Spain due to diseases chronic liver diseases and cirrhosis amounted to more than four thousand deaths.
