La Liga: all-time winners 1929-2023

On May 14, 2023, FC Barcelona claimed its 27th title in Spain's highest professional soccer league – La Liga Santander – by defeating Espanyol Barcelona four to two. With that victory, the club added three points to its tally, which became impossible to catch up for the rest of the season.

Real Madrid sits on top of the 2022/2023 La Liga ranking based on the number of times the team hit the back of the net. “Los Merengues” surpassed FC Barcelona and Atlético de Madrid by seven goals. In total, 955 goals were scored by the 20 teams playing in that season.

Soccer: most popular sport in Spain

With more than 1.1 million holders of a license issued by the Royal Spanish Football Federation, soccer is by a wide margin the most practiced sport in Spain. This shows that the soccer fever in the country does not consist solely of the spectacle offered by its major league – one of the so-called "Big Five" soccer leagues worldwide. Most of the participants in this sport, both at the amateur and professional level, are men. However, the number of registered female footballers in Spain reached the highest figure recorded in the country, at nearly 88 thousand.
