This statistic highlights the share of non-performing exposures at the Italian bank Monte dei Paschi di Siena (MPS) from 2014 to 2016, broken down by type. Non-performing loans (NPLs) are exposures to debtors who are no longer able to meet all or part of their contractual obligations. Over the period of consideration, bad loans represented a large proportion of all non-performing loans at Monte dei Paschi di Siena and their share increased from 54 percent as of 2014 to 64 percent by the end of 2016. Conversely, the share of unlikely-to-pay loans decreased during the period under observation, accounting for 33 percent as of 2016.
