Revenue of the leading chemical companies in the United Kingdom (UK) 2018 Johnson Matthey was by far the biggest chemical company in the UK in 2018, with a revenue of approximately 14 billion British pounds. The British specialty chemicals company can trace its origins back to 1817 and has since become a multinational corporation with a workforce of more than 12 thousand. Of this, 4,000 are based in the UK. According to the Financial Times, Johnson Matthey ranked in the top 10 global chemical companies based on revenue in 2018.
European comparisons

Of the total chemical revenue in the EU, the UK had a share of 6.7 percent. This was only slightly less than the Netherlands and Italy. However, this was a far smaller share when compared to Germany, which contributed 28.6 percent of revenue.

Brexit concerns

With the uncertainty surrounding Brexit, there have been claims that the chemicals industry could lose access to an export market worth nearly 20 billion British pounds. According to a 2018 survey, 80 percent of respondents reported that they were concerned about the impact of Brexit on the chemical industry.
