Luxury travel has been traditionally associated with expensive accommodation and first-class trips. However, this industry has evolved significantly over the last few years, now incorporating unique and extreme experiences, such as those offered by the adventure tourism market or the rising space tourism industry. Overall, the luxury travel market worldwide was estimated at just under two trillion U.S. dollars in 2022, with this figure forecast to increase by roughly six percent by 2032.

What are the leading luxury hotel brands in the world?

Luxury hospitality, one of the most valuable global luxury markets, is a pillar of high-end travel and tourism, turning from a niche segment into a cornerstone of the lodging industry. From 1983 to 2023, the global luxury hotel supply – measured as the number of available rooms – nearly tripled, peaking at more than 1.5 million in 2023. While independent hotels accounted for more than half of luxury rooms that year, Marriott was the brand holding the highest share of luxury hotel supply worldwide, ahead of Hyatt, Accor, and IHG.

How is the luxury cruise market faring?

After being hit hard by the travel restrictions enforced with the onset of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the global cruise industry experienced strong annual growth in 2022. The same applied to the luxury segment, with the growth rate of the global cruise market value rising by more than 300 percent compared to 2021, while remaining 25 percent lower than pre-pandemic levels. When looking at the leading players in this market, Celebrity Cruises, Viking, and Cunard emerged as the luxury cruise brands worldwide with the highest passenger capacity.

What are the preferences of affluent travelers?

According to a global survey of affluent consumers purchasing travel products, younger respondents were more likely to make multiple travel purchases, with approximately three-quarters of buyers aged 18 to 39 stating so in the second quarter of 2023, compared to less than 60 percent of over-40-year-old consumers. As of the same quarter, when looking at the preferred holiday activities by affluent consumers worldwide, six in ten respondents reported having eaten in a fine-dining restaurant or stayed in a five or more starred hotel, whereas just around a quarter of the sample had rented a beachfront villa.
